The 3rd Commandment

This is a pet peeve, I'm hoping this makes you peeved too.

King James, 1611, Exodus 20:7

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

New Living Translation, Exodus 20:7

You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.

Ok, two translations, two different verbs. The Hebrew here is nasa (נָשָׂא). Per grok, this verb has a broad range of meanings depending on context, including "to lift," "to bear," "to carry," "to take," or even "to exalt." While "take" is the most frequent rendering in English translations, "carry" is a plausible and linguistically valid alternative given the semantic range of nasa.

More grok:

That said, some scholars and commentators note that "carry" could align with certain contextual nuances. For instance, nasa can imply bearing or carrying something in a way that reflects responsibility or representation—like carrying a name with honor or dishonor. This idea appears in discussions of the verse, such as in theological works or Hebrew lexicons (e.g., Brown-Driver-Briggs lists "carry" among nasa’s meanings). A translation like "You shall not carry the name of the Lord your God in vain" could suggest not bearing God’s name (or reputation) in a worthless or empty manner.

Dennis Prager:

I understand why King James did that, but the Hebrew is "carry", not "take".

Let's use our brains for a moment. Do you really think the big guy gets upset when you stub your toe and curse the stone? Or do you think he cares when you use him as an excuse to violate the other 9 commandments?

There's only one commandment out of the 10 where god says "This one is all on you", and that's the 3rd.

So...to spell it out for the stupid:

Making up lies about your political opponent because "we're the good guys" is not allowed.

Killing people of another religion because "we're the good guys"? Not allowed.

Raping children because "we're the good guys"? Also not allowed.

Setting up "charities" to funnel money to your political allies? Not allowed.

If God won't forgive you, I'm certainly not going to.

The 3rd is the most important commandment.

BTW, Islam gets this wrong too. So much for being the infallible word of God. Pro tip: Get the commandments right, cretins. There's only 10.
